Truck Drivers At Ports Of Los Angeles, Long Beach Strike

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Truck drivers at the nation's largest port complex were striking Monday against the major firms serving the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The drivers voted in favor of a strike on Saturday, officials said.

They will also be releasing the results of 11th hour negotiations with one trucking company.

The drivers are unhappy they are classified as independent contractors and not employees, which they say makes them exempt from some workplace protections, disability insurance, workers' compensation and unemployment.

The ports are still recovering from months of slow downs after a dispute between shipping companies and dock workers earlier this year.
