Tree Falls Onto Costa Mesa Apartment Building, Prompting Evacuations

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — Residents were evacuated from a Costa Mesa apartment building Monday after a tree fell, possibly collapsing the roof.

The 65- to 70-foot pine tree fell onto an apartment at Pinecreek Village, 1300 Adams Ave., in Costa Mesa -- across from Orange Coast College -- at about 10:30 a.m., Costa Mesa Fire officials said.

The resident of the apartment most significantly damaged was able to get out safely, Costa Mesa Deputy Fire Chief Fred Seguin said.

The roof may have collapsed, prompting the evacuation. As many as 32 apartment units may be affected, authorities said.

No injuries have been reported. At least one building was red-tagged, and building inspectors are checking to see if any others were damaged.

The tree fell during a sudden burst of wind, CBS2/KCAL9's Michele Gile reports.
