Trash Truck Crashes Into Doughnut Shop; 1 Hospitalized

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — One person was hospitalized Tuesday after a sanitation truck crashed through the front window of a doughnut shop in the Winnetka area.

The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. at Sherman Way and Mason Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Kathy Lay, the owner of the shop, was in the back making donuts when the truck barreled through the front of her store.

"It was scary," Lay said, noting

She says it was sheer luck that no one was sitting at the tables in front of the shop. Ordinarily those seats would be occupied at that time of the morning.

"[There were] no cars out front and only one client inside," she said.

The customer wasn't injured. The sole injured person was described as a 58-year-old city employee. He was taken to a hospital in fair condition.

Crews were working throughout the day to shore up the building before removing the truck from the scene.

City building inspectors will determine if the structure is safe to inhabit.
