Torrance Refinery Fire Could Raise Gas Prices

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — New questions were raised Wednesday over whether a Torrance oil refinery fire could cause more pain at the pump.

CBS2's Jasmine Viel reported consumer advocate groups are waiting to see if Tuesday's flare-up could raise gas prices in the South Bay.

Gas prices have the potential to jump 10 cents per gallon in a week, Viel added.

The fire was reported around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3700 block of 190th Street, and burned for about two hours.

A preliminary investigation revealed the fire was located in a high pressure line routed to a flare near the area where hydrochloric acid is used in the refining process.

No serious injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
