3 Killed In I-15 Crash En Route To Funeral

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A couple from South El Monte and a Los Angeles woman were killed when the SUV they were in crashed Friday afternoon en route to a funeral service in Mexicali, authorities said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the victims' identity on Saturday morning. The SUV driver, Jerson Ariel Duron Valeriano, 25, and his wife, Edith Duron, 22, were fatally injured, along with Ivette Garcia, 21. Three passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt.

The 12:30 p.m. Friday crash took place on Interstate 15, just south of the Riverside-San Diego county line, according to the CHP. A witness who was driving behind the Ford Expedition said he saw a tire tread come off a wheel before the vehicle spun out of control. It then flipped over a center barrier and came to rest upside down on the northbound side of the freeway, investigators said.

The injured passengers included the couple's daughter and Duron's 43-year-old mother, Bettencourt told City News Service. They were traveling to Mexico for a memorial service for the 43-year-old woman's father.
