Thousands Of Students Countywide Participate In Annual 'International Walk To School Day'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Thousands of elementary and middle school students participated countywide in "International Walk to School Day" on Wednesday.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m., around 20,000 students from 88 schools participated in the annual event.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilman Curren Price and transportation department officials ushered students of Dolores Huerta Elementary School from the northwest corner of 28th Street and Maple Avenue.

The group arrived at school, located at 260 East 31st Street, by 8 a.m., coordinators said.

According to the Department of Public Health, parents and community-based volunteers formed "walking school buses" to bring their children to school.

The event was developed to promote youth exercise and reduce childhood obesity.
