REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) – A 13-year-old girl was struck and killed by a public bus while biking in Redondo Beach Friday evening.

The collision occurred just after 5:30 p.m. in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Knob Hill Avenue, according to Redondo Beach police. The bus was headed southbound on the PCH approaching Knob Hill Avenue when it hit the teen, police said. The girl was biking with a friend when she was struck. She was identified Saturday morning by the Los Angeles County coroner's office as Ciara Smith, a student at Parras Middle School.

A spokesperson with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority told CBS2 that the bus that struck the girl was operated by a contractor named MV Transportation. Police said the bus driver stopped and appeared to have obeyed all traffic rules.

The PCH was closed in both directions in the immediate area of the crash for several hours Friday night. The exact circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
