Teen Driver Killed After Stolen Van Crashes Into Fire Engine During Pursuit

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — A stolen van that was fleeing Los Angeles police ran into a fire engine that was stopped for a medical call, leaving the 17-year-old driver of the van dead and his passenger seriously injured.

Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says two firefighters inside the truck had only minor injuries from the Wednesday night crash.

Police say the high-speed chase began when officers responding to a call of shots fired in South LA saw the black van leaving the scene at high speed.

The officers gave chase and soon after the van ran into the front of the Engine 233, which is attached to Station 33 in South Los Angeles.

The van's teen driver was declared dead at the scene.

Police say the passenger remains in critical condition on Thursday. His age was not available.
