Tear Gas Helps End Hours-Long Standoff On Amtrak Train In Chatsworth

CHATSWORTH (CBSLA.com) — A six-hour standoff on an Amtrak train in the Chatsworth area came to an end with a man in custody after tear gas was deployed, authorities said.

Word the standoff ended came from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which tweeted a photograph of the suspect on Saturday. He was identified by authorities as 46-year-old Darius Palmer.

The incident unfolded Friday after a passenger reported that there was a man with a gun on the Pacific Surfliner.

"I heard that there was a guy frantically walking up and down the aisle saying, 'If I had a gun, I would kill all these people.' I don't know. There's different stories going on," said one passenger.

The train was evacuated and all train service through Chatsworth was stopped.

"I saw him back there and he was trying to open the door after they locked him in there," said Allison Bird, another passenger. "He wouldn't come out."

Amtrak police say the suspect was armed with a gun when he was taken into custody.

All passengers aboard the train were safe, and accounted for.
