Task Force Recommends New Rules As Drones Fly Off Store Shelves This Holiday Season

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Drones have been flying off the shelves this year and are listed as one of the hottest items for the holidays.

The Federal Aviation Administration has even said it expects 1 million drones to be given as gifts for Christmas.

"It's been … it's been nuts," said Justin Henderson of Drones Plus, where they aren't slowing down even as new requirements are fast-approaching.

A task force assembled by the FAA just recommended new rules to help keep track of who is flying drones, including recommending that the individual be at least 13 years old.

Other recommendations include requiring free online registration and allowing multiple drones to be recording under the same registration number.

The task force also suggests that individuals sign off that they understand the safety information and rules about flying drones.

While most drones that are available would need to be registered, those weighing less than a half-pound would be excluded.

Some in the industry welcome the changes, while others find it a bit more worrisome.

"Real nervous, actually," said Sergio Corral, who was eyeing a drone but now says "no thanks" to buying one. "I don't want to get arrested for owning one, you know?"

There is no clear timeline on if and when the recommendations might become law.
