Suspected Car Thief Leads High-Speed Chase Across Southland Freeways

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A suspected car thief fled from officers when they tried to initiate a traffic stop in Hollywood and led police on a high-speed pursuit across several Southland freeways.

Around 10:45 p.m., LAPD officers on Sunset Boulevard tried to pull the driver over after realizing the silver Toyota compact car was reported stolen, according to a police dispatcher.

The chase began on the 101 North and continued on to the 170 North and the 118 West, leading officers across the San Fernando Valley, Stu Mundel reported overhead from SKY9.

The suspect swerved around cars in excess of 100 mph, often narrowly escaping a collision.

At 11:09 p.m., the suspect slowed down, after the vehicle got two flat tires, and an LAPD patrol car stopped him using a PIT maneuver, clipping his rear bumper.

A minute later, officers smashed the driver's side window to get to the suspect, taking him into custody by force.
