Weapon-Wielding Man, 70, Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting

TARZANA (CBSLA.com) — A 70-year-old man allegedly armed with a knife and gun was injured Friday in an officer-involved shooting in Tarzana.

Authorities were initially called to the 5200 block of Mecca Avenue around 5:10 p.m. to investigate an elderly man with a knife who was threatening to kill a woman and himself, police said.

"When the officers arrived on the scene, they observed the suspect responding from the rear of the residence to the front. Upon his arrival to the front of the residence, he confronted the officers still armed with the shotgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred," said LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery, adding that they did not encounter a woman on the scene.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

No officers were injured.

Reseda Boulevard and Mecca Avenue were both shut down for about a block for the investigation.

Neighbors told KCAL9's Juan Fernandez that the man had a dispute with his ex-wife over some property.
