Suicidal Man Armed With Knife Killed By Police In City Of Orange

ORANGE (CBSLA) – An armed man who family members say was suicidal was shot and killed by police Thursday in a residential neighborhood in the city of Orange.

Officers with the Orange Police Department shot the suspect at around 11:20 a.m. in the 7300 block of Magdalena Drive in the Serrano Heights neighborhood after responding to a 911 call from the suspect's family, authorities told CBS2.

Family members told police the man was suicidal and needed help.

When they arrived on scene, police say the man was standing in the street and began to approach them. When he was uncooperative and did not respond to their commands, police deployed nonlethal ammunition before ultimately opening fire on the individual.

A knife was found next to the suspect's body, officials said. No officers were wounded.

His name was not released, but police say he is in his forties and lives on the street where the shooting occurred.
