Driver Slams Into Tree, Bails On Foot During High-Speed Police Chase

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police say they nabbed a suspect in a stolen car who raced away from officers at speeds topping 120 mph.

The Christmas Day pursuit began on the eastbound 101 Freeway in Thousand Oaks around 1:50 a.m. Thursday, according to California Highway Patrol Tony Polizzi.

CHP officers first followed the driver for allegedly speeding but are now investigating the possibility that the vehicle was stolen.

The suspect continued onto the southbound 405 Freeway. At 2:10 a.m., the driver missed the Wilshire Boulevard exit and tried to get off the freeway using the Wilshire on-ramp, but instead plowed into a tree with enough impact to knock it over, Polizzi said.

The driver fled on foot but police set up a perimeter and were able to catch up to him at 3:37 a.m.

No further information was released.
