Suspect In Animal Shelter Break-In That Led To Deaths Of 4 Dogs Arrested

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say the lead suspect in the break-in at a Jurupa Valley animal shelter that led to the deaths of four dogs has been arrested.

Jason Johnson, 42, was in custody Thursday, a day after his name and photos were released to the public in connection with a break-in at the Jurupa Valley branch of the Riverside County Department of Animal Services. Sheriff's investigators say he was found early Thursday morning at a friend's home.

During the break-in late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, locks on 22 kennels were broken with bolt cutters, releasing more than 40 dogs, four of whom later died. Two small dogs were found mauled to death inside the shelter, while two more were hit by cars.

Sheriff's officials said Johnson broke in to take three pit bulls that were quarantined at the shelter.

Johnson will face charges of animal cruelty, vandalism and burglary, authorities said.
