Man Dead After Shooting Involving Deputy In Paramount

PARAMOUNT (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say an investigation is underway in Paramount after a fatal shooting that involved a deputy.

The incident unfolded Monday afternoon around 2:35 p.m. after a school-resource deputy at Paramount High School learned of a possible fight, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department said in a written statement.

Shortly after, an informant told deputies that one of the men involved had a handgun and provided deputies with a description of the individuals believed to be involved.

A search of the area ensued.

The statement said a responding deputy attempted to make contact with an individual matching the description, and the deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately made available.

No deputies were hurt.

Authorities said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was described as a Latino in his late 20s.

Witnesses told KCAL9's Brittney Hopper that the deceased was a homeless man known in the area. One witness said he was trying to break up the fight.

The statement said a handgun had not yet been recovered.

No further information was immediately available.
