Boy, 9, Hit By Stray Bullet In South LA

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A stray bullet sent a 9-year-old boy to the hospital early this morning.

Detectives say the child, Christopher Montoya, was watching midnight fireworks on Baring Cross and W. 88th St. when he was grazed by the bullet.

He is expected to be OK.

However, the Los Angeles Police Department says some important lessons can be learned from this incident.

"When you shoot that bullet into the air, it has to land somewhere," said LAPD Lt. Jamie Bennet. "And in a densely populated area like Los Angeles, there's a chance you're going to hit someone."

The LAPD also suggests staying inside for the first few minutes on holidays such as New Year's Eve and the 4th of July because you could potentially be injured.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
