Stolen Car Suspect Leads Long Beach Police On Wild Chase, Eludes PIT Maneuver
LONG BEACH (CBSLA) – A suspect who lead police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car from Long Beach to San Pedro early Thursday morning was arrested after barricading himself inside a house for more than three hours.
According to Long Beach police, the chase began at 5:50 a.m., when officers discovered a stolen Honda Civic in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and the 405 Freeway.
When they tried to pull it over, the driver sped off and a chase ensued, which wound onto the southbound 710 Freeway and then made its way onto surface streets in San Pedro.
A little after 6:30 a.m., an officer conducted a PIT maneuver on the car. The Civic was struck by the police patrol car, but the driver was able to escape, somehow navigating his way past several other patrol cars.
A few moments later, the suspect jumped out of the vehicle in the area of West 1st Street and South Cabrillo Avenue and appeared to run into a nearby home.
Officers formed a perimeter around the area. A little after 7 a.m., a man emerged and was seen on camera being taken into custody. However, he was determined not to be the suspected driver, police said.
At around 10:30 a.m., the suspect himself surrendered and was arrested. No weapons were found. Police said the home was somehow linked to the suspect, but would not elaborate.
His name and the charges he faces were not immediately released.
