Stolen Budget Rental Truck Leads Police On 50-Mile Pursuit

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — The driver of a stolen Budget rental truck led police on a wild pursuit Monday through several cities.

Police say the man stole the truck from someone who had made a stop at a junkyard in Sun Valley. The man reportedly jumped into the truck when the victim had stepped out and drove off.

A witness at the junkyard called police upon realizing what was happening and took the liberty to follow the stolen van for a time.

Entering freeway traffic, police said, the man got onto southbound I-5 and transitioned to the eastbound I-210 toward Fontana.

Police ultimately used spike strips to shred the vehicle's tires, bringing the pursuit to an end.

Inside the truck was a dryer, a mattress and other personal belongings.

While no one directly involved with the pursuit was injured, the wet weather and slick roads caused issues on parts of the freeway in the vicinity of the pursuit.
