Statues Of Virgin Mary Beheaded, Jesus Christ Defaced At Palm Springs Catholic Church

PALM SPRINGS (CBSLA.com) — Police were asking for the public's help Thursday to identify who broke the head off a statue of the Virgin Mary and damaged the face of a Jesus Christ statue at a Catholic church in Palm Springs.

Officers responded to a report early this morning of vandalism at the Our Lady of Solitude Church located along the 100 block of West Alejo Road, according to Palm Springs Police Sgt. Paul Abshire.

An investigation found that someone damaged the two concrete statues near the front of the church sometime between 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, Abshire said.

It was not immediately clear what was used to cause the estimated $2,000 worth of damage, said Abshire.

The incident marked the second vandalism attack in a month at the church after two plaster statues in a different location at Our Lady of Solitude were also damaged.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Palm Springs police at (760) 323-8115, or report anonymously to Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-STOP (7867).
