Southern California Drivers Hit The Road Ahead Of Thanksgiving

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — Traffic was backed up on Southern California roads on what was expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Flying over the Newhall Pass, SKY2's Stu Mundel reported that the thoroughfare was more crowded than usual, along with the side roads.

"San Fernando road right there totally backed up, Balboa totally backed up," Mundel said. "There is a lot of extra cars on the road this evening."

Traffic was also backed up in both directions on the 10 Freeway through downtown Los Angeles.

"It is bad all over. All the freeways we've seen this afternoon and evening have been slow-and-go, bumper-to-bumper," Mundel said.

It's anticipated that more than 3.5 million residents will travel 50 miles or more over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Meanwhile, Thanksgiving holiday travelers arriving at LAX found a greater police presence and tougher security screenings days after the issuance of a worldwide travel alert.
