South LA To Get $1 Million Towards Cleaner Streets
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Fed up with persistently littered streets in South L.A., the city councilman representing the area has put in place a $ 1 million cleanup effort.
Councilman Curren Price announced the plan on Tuesday, in partnership with LA Sanitation.
"I live right down the street," he said at a South L.A. press conference. "It's intolerable to see trash and debris and litter in the street ... The situation was ignored."
The plan calls for increased efforts to pick up conspicuous garbage commonly found on streets, such as discarded mattresses and used furniture.
Price said the campaign will include collection five times a week, rather than once. Hundreds of extra trashcans will also be placed in the area.
The money is coming from existing budgetary funds, Price said, rather than new taxes.
The initiative is part of Price's "Clean & Green" campaign to beautify and reduce blight in the district.
The campaign has already begun in other parts of South L.A., where trash buildup has been noticeably reduced, residents said.
"It is a gift," said one South L.A. resident.
