Fatal Crash That Caused Power Outage In South LA Investigated As Hit-And-Run

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Police say they are searching for a woman in connection with a deadly crash briefly knocked out power to thousands of customers early Thursday in South LA.

The crash happened at about 3:15 a.m. on Imperial Highway at Central Avenue, in front of Imperial Tire Services. A Mercedes SUV appeared to have crashed into a power pole, which was left in pieces on the ground.

One person was ejected from the SUV when it rolled. The male passenger was pronounce dead at the scene. His name and age has not been released.

The woman who was driving the SUV and ran from the scene after receiving some help from passersby, according to LAPD Capt. Jonathan Pinto.

"It's very unsettling to have something like that happen," a neighbor said.

The crash knocked out electricity for about 2,000 customers in the area for about an hour.

DWP crews worked through the morning to restore power and repair the pole.

Investigators say speed was a factor in the crash.
