Soul Food Staple Offers Up 99-Cents Menu For 25th Anniversary

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Hungry for some soul food for less than a buck?

Large crowds of people lined Crenshaw Boulevard in South Los Angeles on Wednesday to enjoy fried chicken, short ribs, red beans and black-eyed peas from Chef Marilyn's in honor of one of the city's longest-standing soul food establishments.

The tastiest part: every item on the special menu cost only 99 cents.

Mayor Eric Garcetti and other elected officials were on hand for Chef Marilyn Cole's Day to celebrate Cole's 25 years as a trademark Southland establishment.

"I just love to do it," Chef Marilyn Cole said. "The fact that I can do something and people enjoy it, that's rewarding in itself."

Proceeds will be donated to Parent Action Coalition for Education and Journalism Education Enrichment Program to help steer young people to study journalism.
