SMU Earns South's 6th Seed, Will Play 11th-Seeded UCLA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Larry Brown is back in the NCAA Tournament.

The coach who led Kansas to the 1988 national title has guided SMU to the No. 6 seed in the South Region.

The Mustangs (27-6) will play their tournament opener Thursday in Louisville against 11th-seeded UCLA (20-13).

SMU won the American Athletic Conference Tournament earlier Sunday by beating defending national champion Connecticut in the final to earn its first league championship since 1988 in the Southwest Conference. The Mustangs are in the tournament for the first time since 1993.

UCLA won 12 of its last 17 games under coach Steve Alford but was considered on the tournament bubble after its loss to Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals.
