1 Dead, 5 Injured After Small Plane Crashes Into Car On NB 15 Freeway in San Diego County

FALLBROOK (CBSLA.com/AP) — Authorities say a small plane has crashed on a Southern California freeway and struck a SUV, killing one person and injuring five others.

California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi said the crash occurred Saturday morning on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15, about 50 miles north of San Diego County.

Witnesses told dispatchers that the plane landed on a vehicle.

Sources with the National Transportation Safety Board told Perez the plane appeared to have touched down several times and bounced down the road before slamming into the SUV.

The plane also crashed without being able to deploy its landing gear.

The CHP said even if the Nissan driver, 42-year-old Aaron McCann,  had seen the plane coming there was no way for him to get out of the way. He has apparently stopped and pulled over moments earlier to synch his Bluetooth.

Polizzi says one person in the car died and three others were taken to the hospital. He says two people in the small plane also were transported for treatment.

The crash was blocking two lanes and causing backups.
