One dead after "experimental homebuilt" plane crashes in Corona neighborhood

New information released on fatal plane crash in Corona

One person was killed when a small plane crashed in Corona on Saturday.

Firefighters responded to reports of a vegetation fire near Palos Verde Drive and Auburndale Street just before noon, and upon arrival discovered that a small plane had crashed in the area, according to a statement from Corona Fire Department.

Crews extinguished the fire and found one person dead inside of the plane. Their identity has not yet been released.

It is not known what caused the crash.

"A general aviation aircraft crashed shortly after departure from Corona Municipal Airport in California," said the Federal Aviation Administration in a statement. "Only the pilot was on board. The type of aircraft is unknown at this time."

Both the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

On Saturday, NTSB officials announced on X that they were investigating the incident, which involved an "experimental homebuilt Vans RV-8 airplane."

Corona Police Department officers were also called to the scene to assist firefighters.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
