Small Group Gathers To Remember Slain Bell Gardens Mayor

BELL GARDENS (CBSLA.com)  — A small group gathered Friday to remember slain Bell Gardens Mayor Daniel Crespo.

The mayor was killed Tuesday by his wifem Levette Crespo. She told authorities she shot and killed him while he was assaulting their 19-year-old son and killed him in self defense.

The candlelight service was held at Bell Gardens City Hall.

CBS2's Cristy Fajardo said friends were also dropping off flowers, notes and candles at the Crespo family condo.

Crespo's brother told KCAL9 on Thursday that he believed his former sister-and-law murdered his brother after finding out that Daniel was having an affair.

Willy Crespo said his brother had broken it off with the unidentified woman.

We learned Friday that she is 37, recently divorced and works in the medical field.

Levette Crespo's attorney insists his client shot her husband because he was assaulting their son.

Both Levette and the son reportedly had facial injuries, authorities said.

Deputies said the son has also backed up his mother's version of events.

Daniel Crespo's friends are defending his honor.

"They had their differences," said friend Alberto Bernal, "but the way the attorney is trying portray him as a womanizer and a woman beater? He wasn't."

Detectives told Fajardo they are yet to turn the case over to the DA's office as they are still investigating.
