Sinkhole Opens Up In Front Of High School In Riverside Overnight

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Crews are working to repair the street in front of JW North High School in Riverside after a sinkhole developed Wednesday night, right in front of the campus' driveway.

Riverside officials estimated the size of the sinkhole, which developed just west of the 60/215 Freeway off-ramp at 3rd Street, at 15 by 15 feet and 4 feet deep. There were also other depressions that could indicate potential sinkholes or undermined roads, according to Riverside spokesman Phil Pitchford.

According to Riverside Public Utilities, the preliminary cause of the sinkhole was found to be a leaking 10-inch water main.

Crews immediately contacted the gas company to shut down the high pressure gas line because it lies directly under the sinkhole. Water service was restored to the businesses in the area by Thursday morning.

Major road repair work will likely continue throughout the day.
