Suspect Reported Dead After Firing Shots At Deputy Attempting To Serve Eviction Notice At Chino Home

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com/AP) — Shots were fired at a San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy Wednesday as he served an eviction notice at a Chino home, authorities said.

The shooting occurred along the 11000 block of Santa Anita sometime around 8:20 a.m., according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's spokesperson.

A deputy with the Sheriff's Court Services was serving a notice when an adult male fired a gun at him, authorities said. The deputy was not injured.

KCAL9's Crystal Cruz reporting from the scene at 4 p.m. said the suspect appeared to be dead inside the home.

Officials did not release the suspect's name or age.

Additional shots were fired after more Chino police officers arrived for backup.

SWAT officers were called and deployed "chemical agents" that soon left the home engulfed in flames, police said. The blaze was out by mid-morning.

Chino Valley firefighters are on scene assisting.

Residents were evacuated and asked to avoid the area.

After the incident came to an end, officials showed Cruz bullet marks a SWAT vehicle sustained saying the suspect fired at least three bullets at the vehicle.

She also spoke to Kendall Angel, he bought the house at auction several months ago.

"We heard this gunshot inside the house," Angel said, "and the three of us got the hell out of there."

Angel said he didn't know who was staying in the house.

"It might've been somebody off the street."

The fire destroyed the home.

"It looks like a total loss," Angel said.
