Police Investigate Shots Fired At Coachella Mosque As Hate Crime

COACHELLA (CBSLA.com) — Several gunshots were fired Tuesday at the Islamic Society of Coachella, hitting the building and a vehicle, but no one was injured, authorities said.

Police officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired shortly after 5 a.m. along the 84000 block of Avenue 49, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime.

The Los Angeles Council on American-Islamic Relations office issued a statement calling for an FBI investigation.

"Any time shots are fired at a house of worship, the FBI should offer its resources to local authorities to help determine whether or not there was a bias motive for the attack," CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Coachella Police Department at (760) 863-8990.
