Shotgun-Wielding Man Wounded In Boyle Heights Officer-Involved Shooting

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com)  — The Los Angeles Police Department responding to a call about a man with a mental illness reportedly shot the suspect Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the 3200 block of E. Lanfranco Street in Boyle Heights, authorities said.

Just before 1:40 p.m., officials responding to the scene said they encountered a subject who was yelling and violent.

The suspect was shot once and wounded.Sunday afternoon, police said the man had a shotgun and refused an order to drop the weapon. The suspect did not fire his weapon.

Authorities said the unidentified man was later taken to County + USC Hospital for treatment.

The suspect's injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

One of the suspect's neighbors told CBS2's Cristy Fajardo the man is "ill-tempered."

Witnesses told Fajardo the man was acting violently and threatening people along his block.

After the man came out of his house, they said he was brandishing a shotgun.

Witnesses heard police fire at least three shots.

"It appears the man pointed the weapon at officers," said Capt. Martin Baeza of the LAPD.

No officers were injured in the altercation.
