Semi Truck Carrying Shattered Glass Overturns On Freeway In Boyle Heights

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — Officials Monday are on the scene of a traffic collision involving a semi truck and a vehicle.

The truck collided with a minivan, and overturned shortly before 6 a.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway transition to the 60 eastbound connector, according to police.

Officials said the truck was hauling thousands of pounds of shattered glass at the time of the crash, which subsequently spewed across the freeway.

One person has been transported with unknown injuries. The truck driver escaped with with only cuts and bruises.

All lanes of the East Los Angeles Interchange were closed while authorities worked to clean up the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol Southern Division.

CBS2's Stephanie Simmons added diesel that spilled into a dirt patch near the road would also need to be removed before the area reopens.

Shortly after 11 a.m., Caltrans officials prepared to reopen the roadway.

Investigators said they will look into how fast the truck was traveling around the curve before the driver lost control and crashed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
