The shooting occurred in the parking lot of an AutoZone store in the 10900 block of Long Beach Boulevard at around 4:45 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The security guard told deputies he was off-duty and sleeping in his car when three suspects drove up and tried to open his doors, prompting him to confront them and open fire. He then drove away and called 911.

"I can't speak for him, but I would assume being in a situation like that, I would assume he was afraid for his safety, and to stay in this area, so he fled and called sheriff's department immediately like he should have," sheriff's Lt. Scott Hoglund said.

One man died at the scene and two others were rushed to a hospital, the sheriff's department said. Their conditions were not confirmed.

The guard was detained for questioning. Deputies told CBS2 that he had a license to carry a firearm, but they are working to ensure it is valid.

Deputies did not immediately confirm whether the suspects were armed, returned fire or even knew the victim was in his car.
