Security Extra Tight At 'Straight Outta Compton' Movie Premiere In Downtown LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Security was beefed up at the premiere of the new movie "Straight Otta Compton" in Downtown Los Angeles Monday night.

Every celebrity and attendee had to go through a metal detector. And members of the Los Angeles Police Department's gang unit were also on the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater.

But no one CBS2/KCAL9 talked to seemed to mind the unusually tight security. "I'm not surprised by any of it. I think that's speaks to what the movie is about," said Cara Patterson who plays Tomica. "It speaks to everything that's going on in our country," she said.

The film chronicles the rise and fall by the hip-hop group N.W.A., which grew out of Compton in the '80s

Ice Cube, one of the founding members of N.W.A., produced the movie. His son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., plays his father in the movie.

"When you're doing school performances and plays like that when you see your parents walk through the doors, it calms you. So that's exactly what it did for me. It wasn't about don't mess up," Jackson said. "It's about let's show them what we can do."

Inside the theater, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and MC Ren, original members of N.W.A., gave thanks for all the support. Sheldon Smith, who plays Warren G, says this movie will change the perception of how people view the hip-hop world.

"This movie is powerful. It's inspiration, and it's going to change a lot of lives. It's going to give people hope, you know, to move forward, especially with what's going on with police nowadays," Smith said.

"There's enough videotapes. There's enough things out there going on now to hold these officers accountable," Ice Cube told CNN. "Let's do it. We just gotta have the courage."

"Straight Outta Compton" hits theaters Friday.
