Second man arrested for deadly shooting at Long Beach homeless encampment in 2021

Authorities have announced a second arrest in connection with the deadly shooting at a Long Beach homeless encampment in January of 2021. 

The initial incident, which took place in the 2300 block of E. 68th Street on Jan. 10, 2021 at around 8:10 p.m., left one man dead at an encampment that sat adjacent to the westbound 91 Freeway, according to the Long Beach Police Department. 

The victim, since identified as 64-year-old Samuel Villalba, was declared dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the upper body, police said. 

At the time, witnesses told investigators that they saw two or more men running from the area on foot toward Cherry Avenue, according to LBPD's release. 

In October 2024, detectives arrested Andrew Reyna, a 47-year-old Lakewood resident, in connection with the shooting. He was taken into custody at a Lynwood motel on suspicion of murder and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. 

On Thursday, LBPD detectives arrested a second suspect, 45-year-old Lakewood man Jesse Galvan. He was arrested at his home on suspicion of murder and is also being held on $2 million bail, police said.
