Sean Penn Opens Up About His Interview With 'El Chapo'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Actor Sean Penn is opening up about his interview with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman for Rolling Stone magazine.

In an interview airing Sunday on "60 Minutes," Penn sat down with CBS' Charlie Rose.

Penn said he doesn't believe his October meeting with "El Chapo" led to his capture last week.

Authorities say "El Chapo" broke free from a Mexican maximum-style prison last July.

"El Chapo's" alleged cartel, according to authorities, is the No. 1 supplier of heroine, cocaine and marijuana to the United States.

Mexican authorities said the meeting between the actor and "El Chapo" helped tip them off to his whereabouts.

"Here's the things that we know. We know that the Mexican government, they were clearly humiliated by the notion that someone found him before they did," said Penn.

"Well, nobody found him before they did," Penn added. "We're not smarter than the DEA or the Mexican intelligence. We had a contact upon which we were able to facilitate an invitation."

When asked whether Penn was fearful for his life, he replied: "No."
