Santa Ana Police Use Interactive Simulator To Practice When To Use Deadly Force

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — The Santa Ana Police Department is using an interactive simulator to practice when to use deadly force.

"The decision-making, and what the officer is trained and perceives at the time, is what's critical," Cpl. Oscar Lizardi said.

KCAL9's Stacey Butler reports that the department is using the newest, most advanced version of the MILO Simulator.

"Right now, this is the best equipment there is," Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Every few months, officers train using 2,500 different scenarios. The laser gun looks and feels like a service weapon, but it only shoots lasers.

"The scenarios advance as you advance. If you miss, they continue to come at you," Bertagna said.

"It is challenging enough for the officer to have to not only make that split-second decision, but also they have to take a shot, they have to be accurate," Lizardi said.
