Carjacking Suspect Taken Into Custody After Dangerous Pursuit In San Gabriel Valley

ARCADIA (CBSLA) — A police pursuit that officials said started with a traffic collision in Stanton that erupted into a road rage incident ended on the 210 Freeway in Pasadena.

The chase began in Orange County Saturday afternoon after the sheriff's department got a call about a carjacking, which happened following a road rage incident.

Sky9 was overhead as the driver of the minivan darted across highway lanes in the San Gabriel Valley, nearly sideswiping other cars.

At one point, the driver bailed from the vehicle and ran into a Monrovia house where a woman ran out and a man ran inside after the suspect, who then doubled back to the minivan and took off.

A few miles down the road, the driver got wedged between two vehicles at the corner of West Foothill Boulevard and North Baldwin Avenue in Arcadia.

"I was thinking, 'What was this fool trying to do trying to squeeze in between two cars," Sue M, a motorist said.

When the driver couldn't get through, he backed up and then rammed his way past the vehicles ahead — only to leave the van disabled.

"It was very, very scary, especially when he got out of the car and just started walking across the street and throwing up his hands and everything," Sue M, who was in one of those vehicles with her grandchildren, said.

From there, the suspect ran onto the 210 Freeway where traffic was moving slowly enough for drivers to safely maneuver around him.

At one point, the suspect attempted to carjack one of the motorists, but could not get the door open.

Eventually officers with California Highway Patrol were about to get him to surrender by getting on the pavement. After he was cuffed and taken to a patrol car, he could be seen complaining of pain. He was taken to a local hospital by paramedics.

Despite the crash that ended the chase, police said there were no injuries to innocent bystanders.
