San Bernardino Pursuit Ends In Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A wild pursuit on the 215 Freeway ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting Friday.

The suspect is believed to have stolen a Toyota Scion SUV in the area of Base Line Street and Belden Avenue in Banning Friday afternoon, according to police.

Authorities say there was a GPS device in the vehicle that enabled them to find it quickly.

The suspect then led police on a chase, with speeds reaching upwards of 100 mph and a number of cars being hit, including police cruisers.

The suspect hit a median as he was trying to flee and rammed a police cruiser head-on. Police say that's when four to five officers opened fire on the suspect, who was killed at the scene around 4 p.m.

Police say the suspect was seen throwing a number of items outside the car during the pursuit. They were still trying to recover those items Friday afternoon.

Traffic on the northbound side of the 215 near Kendall Drive was at a standstill during the afternoon commute, with police shutting down a mile-long stretch of the freeway into the late evening.

The suspect's identity was not immediately released.

Police have said, however, the suspect is from Banning and that he has a criminal record out of state.
