2 children severely injured after San Bernardino hit-and-run driver drags stroller during crash

Hit-and-run driver severely injuries two young children in San Bernardino

San Bernardino police are seeking help from the public as they look to identify a hit-and-run driver who severely injured two young children on Monday evening.

Officers rushed to the intersection of Arrowhead Avenue and 27th Street at around 5:30 p.m. after learning of the collision, according to a news release from the San Bernardino Police Department.

"A group of families with several young children were walking home from a local dog park and began crossing Arrowhead Avenue at 27th Street. An unknown gray-colored vehicle, traveling northbound on Arrowhead Avenue, struck a baby stroller, dragging it down the block, severely injuring two children," the release said.

Family members of the children said that the stroller was dragged about 100 yards before it dislodged from under the car.

The children, a 4-month-old baby girl and a 3-year-old boy, were both taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries, police said. Both remained hospitalized on Wednesday as they continued to recover. The children's father says that the toddler suffered a broken leg and the infant has a brain bleed and ruptured spleen. Both have been released from the ICU.

"Either they weren't paying attention or ... they did it on purpose," said Marcelo B. "They took off, they really don't show no signs of really caring."

He says that the stroller seatbelt his baby daughter was wearing may have saved her life.

"I'm glad all my kids, you know, they're alive. It's kinda what's pushing me through it," he said.

Cindy Sierra was with the group as they went for a walk on Monday evening.

"There was no cars, we even took precautions with our kids," Sierra said. "It was clear, so we just, honestly I don't know what happened at that moment. ... I can remember, it's just basically seeing the lights of the car just so close to them already that, it just, the impact just hit and it happened in the blink of an eye."

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or who may know more to contact them at (909) 998-3773.
