San Bernardino County Deputy Fatally Shoots Man

BARSTOW (AP) — A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who police say wouldn't stop hitting him in the face.

The sheriff's office said Friday that the deputy stopped to question 29-year-old Nathaniel Pickett after seeing him jump a fence into a Barstow motel parking lot Thursday night.

The sheriff's office says Pickett gave a false name and became uncooperative.

When the deputy tried to cuff the Barstow man, the sheriff's office says Pickett tried to run and a fight ensued. The sheriff's office says Pickett began repeatedly hitting the deputy in the face and ignored commands to stop.

That's when the deputy shot Pickett, killing him.

The deputy, whose name was not released, was treated at a hospital for multiple injuries, including broken bones. The shooting is under investigation.
