Runyon Canyon Park Reopens Tuesday After 4-Month Closure

RUNYON CANYON (CBSLA.com) — Hikers can rejoice. The popular hiking area, Runyon Canyon Park, in Hollywood Hills reopens early Tuesday morning after being closed for four months.

The park was shut down while crews replaced an 90-year-old, 6-inch water main that snakes through the canyon for about a mile.

They also added fire hydrants, restored and paved the fire road, added drinking fountains and cleaned up the park.

There was also a plan to build a basketball court and a retaining wall. But the project was halted in June after public outcry by Runyon Canyon Defenders, made up of  about 1,000 members, many in the entertainment industry.

The 130-acre park is two blocks from Hollywood Boulevard, west of the 101 Freeway extending north to Mulholland Drive.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said the work was done under budget by $1 million.
