Riverside police officer killed in off-duty motorcycle crash in Nuevo
An off-duty Riverside Police Department officer was killed during a motorcycle crash Monday.
According to RPD Public Information Officer Ryan Railsback, the crash occurred at around 7:15 p.m. on Pico Avenue and Santa Rosa Avenue in Nuevo.
The officer was identified as Sergeant Matt Lewis, a 25-year veteran and Riverside local.
"We are saddened by the tragic and sudden death of our brother," a statement from RPD Chief Larry Gonzalez said. "He was well-liked and admired, not only by those he worked alongside with at our department, but throughout the law enforcement community. More importantly, Matt was a family man who loved his four children and one grandchild dearly. We hurt right now over this loss and ask our community to join us as we mourn Sergeant Lewis and support his grieving family in this immense time of need."
The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately known.
