Riverside Police Officer Hailed For Saving Choking Baby

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A Riverside police officer is being called a hero Saturday for saving a baby -- who was turning blue when she arrived -- from choking to death.

Just after noon today, Officer Janet Ramos, who had been near the 4300 block of Central Avenue, was responding to another call when she saw a mother frantically waving her arms about.

The mother was clutching her 8-month-old daughter who was non-responsive.

The child was choking on a bottle cap.

The officer was first unsuccessful in dislodging the cap from the girl's throat with the use of blows to her back.

Finally Officer Ramos stuck her fingers down the child's throat and was able to grab the plastic cap, said a statement by police. The baby started crying and was able to breathe on her own.

Paramedics arrived to transport the baby to Kaiser Hospital for treatment.

The girl has been given a clean bill of health and hospital personnel said the officer certainly saved the child's life.
