Riverside High School Closed, Residents Evacuated After Nearby Gas Leak

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A Riverside County school was closed and residents were evacuated Monday after an unknown gas leak was reported.

The leak was discovered just after 6 a.m. in a tank in the backyard of a home on 13th Street near Park Avenue, officials said.

Residents between 10th and 14th streets and Victoria Avenue and Commerce Street were evacuated to Caesar Chavez Park, according to the fire department.

Nearby Abraham Lincoln High School was also closed for the day.

The tank was sealed and the leak was stopped just after 8 a.m. but an evacuation of the area was still in place as a precautionary measure, Riverside fire officials said.

One firefighter and a police officer were both transported to a local hospital for evaluation after possible exposure. Their condition was unknown.

The cause of the leak and type of gas was under investigation.
