Cook joined Cal Fire in June 2006, according to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who shared a statement upon learning of the firefighter's death. He is survived by his wife and three children.
"Today, Jennifer and I mourn the loss of Engineer Cook who served his community with honor and integrity," Newsom's statement said. "We offer our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and colleagues during this difficult time. May his service and sacrifice never be forgotten."
A man and a woman with minor injuries were also transported to a hospital. A procession for the 45-year-old firefighter will take place on Wednesday afternoon in Moreno Valley. Gov. Newsom ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the California State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space to honor Cook.
