Recovery Effort For Missing Swimmer In Dana Point Terminated After 30-Hour Search

DANA POINT (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a search and recovery effort resumed Sunday morning for a swimmer who went missing off Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point.

As of Sunday at 6 p.m., however, the rescue effort was officially terminated after more than 30 hours.

The unidentified 60-year-old man was visiting from out-of-state and was with friends and family, who subsequently reported him missing.

Authorities launched a multi-agency search Saturday afternoon for the man, who was described as an avid swimmer.

The man was last seen swimming in the 33000 block of south Pacific Coast Highway. However, after several hours, the search became a recovery effort after it was determined that the man did not leave the water.

The swimmer went missing during red flag conditions due to 5-7 foot waves with shore breaks and strong currents.

Authorities caution that red flag conditions are expected to continue into Sunday. The water is being churned up by Hurricane Lowell 850-miles away at the tip of Baja California.
