Records Reveal Woman Suspected In LAPD Motorcycle Officer's Death Has Troubled Past
SUN VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — The woman suspected of killing an LAPD motorcycle officer with her SUV this weekend reportedly has a troubled past.
Qaneak Shaney Cobb, 44, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of driving under the influence of a drug and being in possession of cocaine.
The Pacoima resident Saturday reportedly plowed her Chevrolet Blazer into Officer Chris Cortijo's motorcycle, trapping him between the SUV and a Honda Accord.
Bail has been set at $150,000.
This isn't Cobb's first brush with the law: In 1999, Cobb was convicted of grand theft and, in 2008, she was found guilty of petty theft with a prior. In 2012, she was convicted of possession of a controlled substance.
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Cobb's driver's license expired in 2005, but she did have a clean driving record.
Meanwhile, a memorial is growing outside the LAPD Valley Traffic Division in honor of 26-year veteran Officer Cortijo.
Just a week ago, Cortijo was named "Officer of the Year" at his station for the second time in his career.
His co-workers say Cortijo was a hard worker who wanted to keep impaired drivers off the streets.
Officer Bill Bustos said, "Sometimes I teased [Cortijo] about the glasses that he wore, the goggles that he wore, and it had a tremendous amount of impact on us seeing those glasses on the ground."
