Quake Preparedness Tips From The Experts
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — In the wake of a strong earthquake that rattled Northern California Sunday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urged residents to remain cautious and to expect aftershocks.
The early morning quake caused significant damage when it struck around 3:30 a.m. in Napa County.
Although its magnitude has fluctuated between 6.0 and 6.1, officials said the quake was said to be the largest to hit the San Francisco Bay Area since 1989.
FEMA urged residents to drop, cover and hold, minimizing the number of steps to a safe place. Those inside are urged to stay put until the shaking stops and it's safe to leave.
The agency warned that cellular and landlines may not be working properly.
Finally, FEMA advised residents to check for gas leaks.
People can prepare in advance by purchasing bottled water and food that can be stored for long periods of time. They should also pack a flashlight and batteries, along with blankets.
